Subway Hands (by Aref JDEY)

Initially, one question has motivated the development of this project: how far is it possible to interpret and determine the history and profile of a traveler on the Parisian subway, through his hands?

The project is fully candid fashion, without letting people know they are photographed, with the technique called “shooting from the hips.” I preferred to use black and white for its timelessness, to focus on the details of each hand. Available light highlights just one part of the hands and thus adds mystical and mysterious or dramatic aspect for each hand position. The challenge was not to disturb people so they do not change their behavior, by getting close enough to them  to have a detailed close up.
